Air Source Heat Pumps are becoming increasingly popular as they are a form of heating that helps reduce your homes CO2 emissions as they are not totally reliant on the use of fossil fuels.
Air Source Heat Pumps work on the principle that they take energy from the air outside which is raised to a higher temperature and released into the building. To understand the principle in simpler terms the process is like refrigeration except that the air that is expelled is warm not cold.
There are two types of heat pump systems currently on the market they are Air to Water and Air to Air heat pumps.
The heat is extracted from the outdoor unit at temperatures up to minus 15c and pumped into the building to provide heating and hot water.
This system can be connected to all types of existing wet heating systems. It is also ideal for under floor heating systems and radiators that give heat at lower temperatures over long periods. They also provide hot water for use in the home.
They do however require electricity to operate and will require a back up system to provide peak demand heating and hot water.
Air to air heat source pumps work on the same principle as mentioned above but providing heat for your building only which is circulated via fans.
The government has introduced this scheme to encourage people to use heat from renewable sources such as Air Source Heat Pumps
Further details on the Renewable Heat Incentive [RHI] can be found on both the Energy Savings Trust and DECC websites and the RHI website.
